You go where you look

When I was about 25, I almost lost control of my Superbike. I was following a friend through relatively quiet, long roads outside the city. We were maintaining between 160kmph and 240kmph despite the long grass as there were very few crossroads. My mind wandered for a second, and when I looked up I was heading into a blind corner... fast. I braked as hard as I could without losing control and summoned the crux of my racetrack experience.

You go where you look.

These five magic words are the sacred geometry of the subconscious. They are the guiding principle behind esoteric. They are “The Secret”, the power of prayer, the foundation of NLP, and, if you really need them, they will save your life.

I married young; we are all stupid in our 20s. Like most young brides it was crucial to get a bad-ass body. As a lifelong curvy girl this was going to require some really big adjustments. My curves are no accident, I love the pleasures of food and drinks with friends on a sunny day. Cheese is a food group. My health and fitness plan required me to sacrifice most of my guilty pleasures at least temporarily. I made the decision to adopt the changes as if they were not new. I do not eat cheese, I do not have a sweet tooth, I do not like to drink alcohol. In the end it wasn’t a battle at all and within three months I had the body I had been dreaming about for years.

I have been successful with this approach many times. But the pendulum swings both ways.

More recently I have found myself over-correcting. As a victim of the human condition, I have been overindulging in my various vices. My now ex-husband succumbed to his addictions, dragging me through that roller-coaster of pain by strings of loyalty and love for almost a decade. I swore I would never let myself deteriorate in the same way and have over-analysed the bottom of every bottle and the wild script of every story, watching them come more and more frequently.

You go where you look.

If you invoke the power of this logic, watching the micro-adjustments of your point of view on your body and your life will feel surreal.

I made it through the corner. I needed to swerve into oncoming traffic to take the racing line which I knew was my only chance, but I trusted that the CBR600RR was capable of more than I was and hoped like hell there was nobody else driving on the other side of the tall grass. My angels worked shifts in my 20s. And maybe ten years before that!

Relinquishing control in the name of trust is deeply understood by horses but when that animal is spirited and you are moving quickly towards a solid fence, there is a brief moment where he checks in to see if you are sure. His ears move forward, his neck and body tense up and he evaluates your confidence to proceed. That moment requires unobstructed trust. If you doubt for even a second, the horse will swerve out. He reads the vibrations in your body in the same way you feel his. They are the five words they teach you before you even know how to canter.

You go where you look.

What you focus on matters. It manifests spiritually and physically. If you can’t understand why your life is not going in the direction you thought should be, maybe you’re lying to yourself about what you really want. Maybe you’re giving yourself a narrative of fear. Consider stepping back.
